These work great for rats! Even the young rat pups have no problem with them. I mounted mine in a1/2″ mesh ceiling. But there are some considerations:• Back the plastic hex-key adjustment all the way out, then take it one or two turns back in. Rats are smaller than rabbits and this reduces the pressure necessary to release the water.• The threads of the nibblers and metal tabs are not consistent. The nibblers end up facing different directions when firmly screwed into the tabs. So be sure you install the nibbler with the drinking side pointed in your desired direction in the enclosure. With mine, some are mounted sideways, others front to back.• Cutting away one bar of the 1/2″ mesh made it fit perfectly, and the spring worked like a charm.• Some rats seemed to have difficulty understanding what it was. So I reached in and tapped the nibbler, causing water to be suspended between the nipple and body. Once they understand this curious new addition to their habitat is associated with water, they will work until they figure out how to trigger it. You can also loosen the aforementioned hex adjuster until it leaks ever so slightly, then tighten it back up once they’ve figured it out. Now, they may well figure it out on their own without all these measures. Rats are, after all, curious animals and will gnaw and fiddle with anything new in their environment. But I didn’t want to take any chances.• 5/16″ ID hose works but does not fit very snuggly. There were leaks, even with just a gravity feed. I think there must be a metric / SAE incompatibility, because the hose fit the bulkhead valve and other fittings just fine. I think maybe these nibblers are metric. Anyway, I just used some super-small zip-ties and the whole system works beautifully. Mine is gravity fed, not pressurized.• Instead of a standard 5 gallon bucket, I used an Arm & Hammer laundry detergent bucket – which is square rather than round. The flat wall makes bulkhead fitting a snap!• I don’t see these working with water pressure. However, you can set up a gravity feed system like mine—then add a toilet tank float-valve. Voila. No more filling the tank.Once you get them up and running, these nibbler / drinker valves work great and are about 1/10 the price of the reptile feeder-rodent systems out there.Good luck! [...]
